El Fagr

El-Fagr has been one of the most prominent weekly newspapers in Egypt since it was founded in 2005. Its editor-in-chief, Adel Hamouda, was sentenced to one year in prison in 2007 with three other editors-in-chief of private newspapers for insulting President Mubarak. His sentence was not enforced until the appeals court overturned the prison sentence in 2009 but it kept the fine imposed on him.

Hamouda became famous in the 1990’s as the sub-editor of state-owned Rose Al-Yousef magazine. The was then appointed by Mubarak’s regime as a writer for the state-owned Al Ahram. He also host TV shows after the 2011 revolution. Hamouda is known to have good relations with state institutions.

The support of businessman and owner of the newspaper, Nassif Kauzman, is probably the main reason for El Fagr to continue publishing throughout the years.
