The Egyptian Company for Arab and International Publishing is the publisher of Al Shorouk newspaper. It is one of the companies of Dar El Shorouk Publishing Distribution and Printing Group, which also includes Al Shorouk Bookstores, Al Shorouk Media and Television Production Company, Clip Solutions Company for Digital Media production, and the National Company for Printing. The Board of Directors of Dar Al Shorouk is headed by the Egyptian engineer and publisher Ibrahim Al-Moallem, the son of the Arab publisher Mohamed Al-Moallem, the founder of Dar Al-Shorouk.
Mohamed Al-Moallem (1918-1994) was one of the pioneers of modern publishing in Egypt and the Arab world. He founded Dar Al-Shorouk in 1948 under the name Dar Al Qalam. In 1966, the Egyptian authorities nationalized Dar Al Qalam along with a number of other publishing houses such as Dar Al Ma'arif and Dar Al Helal. In 1968, Al-Moallem tried again to establish a private publishing house, and succeeded in establishing Dar Al-Shorouk. After his success in Cairo, he opened another branch in Beirut in 1969, and then added a printing section to both branches. After the death of Mohamed Al-Moallem in 1995, the house was managed by his son, Ibrahim Al-Moallem, who soon became one of the most influential figures in publishing in Egypt and the Arab world.
By the end of 2010, Citadel Capital Group decided bought a significant share of Dar Al-Shorouk with Al-Moallem retaining a percentage that guarantees management right. This was done by Egyptian businessman Ahmed Heikal, founder of the Citadel Capital Group and the son of the late journalist Mohamed Hassanein Heikal.
